Design Technology

Lower School (Key Stage 3)

In years 7-9 DT skills are gained by pupils completing a range of different projects covering a number of areas. In each project, new materials, skills and processes are introduced and demonstrated. Pupil Booklets, reinforcing the design process and theoretical aspects of the subject, are completed alongside workshop manufacture. These booklets mirror the structure used in industry and for the GCSE coursework completed in years 10 & 11. Pupils are taught to safely use a range of popular hand tools and workshop machines, as well and gaining skills in research, design and evaluation.

In all Key Stage 3 work, pupils will be investigating a need or responding to an opportunity to make or modify something. They will use their knowledge and understanding to devise a method or solution to a problem, realise it practically and evaluate the end products. Pupils will keep a comprehensive folder of work that records not only the end products of their efforts but also the development work leading to the final outcome.

Pupils must bring the following to EVERY DT lesson, even if they don’t think they’ll need it:

  • A comprehensive pencil case containing: pens, pencils (sharp or clickable), coloured pencils, scissors, glue-stick, ruler, compass.
  • Workshop Apron
  • Project Booklet
  • Any Homework That May Be Due

DT is taught for one hour a week during years 7 & 8.

In year 9 , in addition to the normal one hour lesson a week, we run a very successful ‘Technology for all ’ courses. This course runs during an extra one hour period allocated to year 9’s and works by rotating groups 5 times over the course of the year, between five different teachers, covering five different topics. Pupils will have hands on experience in;

  • 3-Dimensional CAD (Computer aided Design)
  • Smart Materials
  • CAD/CAM in textiles technology
  • Citizenship & Batch Production
  • Technical Drawing & Net production

Design Room 4

This very enjoyable course allows pupils to experience a wide range of facets to the subject, which are difficult to include in conventional lessons.

Year 8 GCSE FAST TRACK

In year 8, we run a very special scheme whereby a small group of the very BEST DT students in the year group are selected and offered the chance to complete a GCSE early. During out-of-school sessions throughout years 8 & 9, pupils complete their coursework, with the exams taken at the end of year 9, at the same time as year 11. On completion of this extra course, pupils are then able to select an additional DT GCSE to complete at the normal speed throughout years 10 & 11.
