Design Technology

BTEC - Construction (Open Option)

Pupils will learn about the construction industry in both a practical and theoretical
way. They will undertake a bricklaying module during the course. The overall course
is worth 2 GCSEs. Places are limited to 12 students.

OCR Design and Technology: Food Technology (Full Course)

During this two year course, pupils are taught the theory and practice of food, and
how to apply this knowledge to the design process to develop new and marketable
food products. Over the two year period, the course is continuously assessed
through four units - two coursework based tasks and two written examinations

The Food Technology GCSE course is designed to further develop design and
making skills learnt throughout Key Stage 3. Pupils will extend their knowledge of
the design process, learning how the environment and changes in society will have
an effect on their ideas and designs. The practical element will continue to playa
large part in the course and will develop skills already learnt through the 'Licence to
Cook' scheme completed in Year 9.

Pupils must be prepared to bring ingredients on a regular basis for practical tasks.
Food testing and analysis will playa large part in the design process and pupils must
also be prepared to work with some foods they may not like or have never tried
before to broaden their knowledge.

Below is a table outlining the structure of the two year course. Throughout the
course, pupils will build a folder of knowledge to aid completion of these units.

Internally controlled assessment- 20 hour coursework based task to be completed in school.

Worth 30% of final grade.

Unit 4 - Year 11 Written
Technical aspects of designing and making

This written exam will test pupils knowledge gained over the two year course - areas to examination be covered include: the design process, diet and nutrition, health and safety, industrial production, product analysis, tools and equipment, processes and skills and principles of preservation.

1 hour 15 minute written examination completed in school.
