Drama
Perhaps the most familiar activity which one would usually associate with the word DRAMA is ‘acting’ in theatrical productions or on TV or Film. Indeed, many of our students enjoy the chance to perform in extra-curricular activities such as the School Production which takes place in February each year. Click here to see photos.
We pride ourselves in our skills based approach to Drama in which we teach pupils different ways to stage scenes and develop their performance skills such as voice projection, characterisation and movement. The subject, however, can develop knowledge and understanding in other ways. Through the use of Drama, our pupils learn to work as part of a team, to lead others or to come to a compromise, to think creatively, to present ideas and suggestions, to debate social issues, to build their confidence when speaking in front of others and to evaluate and develop their own work independently. Therefore it is an excellent subject to take for those considering any career.
We believe that every pupil, regardless of ability, can enjoy and reap the benefits of studying Drama.
Pupils at Hall Mead take Drama as a compulsory subject in Years 7, 8 and 9. They study a wide range of topics, some of which include, Fairytales, the Plague, Physical theatre, Shakespeare and Film trailers. We also offer a range of workshops and extra curricular activities for years 7-9. Click here to see our recent ‘Lion King’ workshop led by West End performer Tanya Nicole Edwards.
Drama is also offered at GCSE as an option subject during the 10th and 11th years where it is a very popular choice. Students study the Edexcel syllabus and cover topics as diverse as Commedia dell Arte and Pantomime to Naturalism and Abstract Drama. Students also learn about theatre practitioners such as Stanislavski and Brecht and use their methods in their own work. Each year, our GCSE pupils are given the opportunity to perform for an audience. This year, Parents were invited to two Pantomimes, Cinderella and Snow White.
